Poll book, Kings Lyn, 1781.

Manuscript on vellum, in multiple hands, of lists of the Mayors of Lynn in both alphabetical and chronological order. The first hand records names from the early 13th century to 1781, and later hands continue the entries to 1836. At the end of the manuscript is a list of voters, their professions or occupations, and a record of their votes at the Parliamentary elections of June 1747, when Horace Walpole was returned; the other candidates were "Sir J. Turner, Esq." and "Will. Folkes, Esq."

The South Sea Company was founded in 1711 to trade with Spanish America, on the assumption that the War of the Spanish Succession would end with a treaty permitting such trade. Dr. John Allen (1771-1843) was a political and historical writer. In 1791 he graduated with an MD from the University of Edinburgh. In 1801, in his capacity as a doctor, he accompanied Lord Holland to Spain, and on his return to England became a regular inmate of Holland House. Although he served in 1806 as under-secretary to the commissioners for treating with America, Allen is best known for his social life at Holland House, especially as documented in his diary.
